One of the marvellous form of

traditional fine arts. It is the art of creating very large pictures on floor (especially of Goddess Kali), with natural coloured powders. It exists in different forms and with different names in different parts of India. However, the peculiar ‘kalam’ created in temples is very beautiful and unique. ‘Kalams’ are drawn to worship snakes and other deities also. In each case the patterns, minutest details, dimensions and colour choice are mandatory and not arbitrary. The patterns vary considerably depending on the occasion, but rarely by the choice of the artist. Even the creation is in specific order. The drawing is done by experts directly with the hand, using vegetable or mineral or combined. The usual items used are: Rice (white), Turmeric (yellow), Charcoal from paddy husk (black), blend of Turmeric powder and Lime (red) and powdered leaves (green).
