The facial expressions

used by the actors express the nine principal aesthetic emotions - love, valour, pathos, wonder, derision, fear, digust, fury and tranquility. The mudras supply them with a complete language of gestures which enables them not only to interpret the lines of the story, but also to communicate with each other on matters relevant to the occassion. Not a word spoken by the actors, though the evil and animal characters emit weired sounds from time to time to emphasise their self-importance.
